Hardwood lumber grading, manufacturing workshop set

February 5, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Purdue Extension workshop for producers and users of hardwood lumber will offer advice on proper application for different lumber grades and provide the opportunity to practice grading.

The Hardwood Lumber Grading and Manufacturing workshop will be 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 at the Elkhart Country Fairgrounds, 17746 County Road 34, Goshen.

Daniel Cassens, professor of wood products at Purdue University and organizer of the workshop, has worked in the hardwood lumber industry for about 42 years and has taught numerous grading seminars.

"Hardwood lumber grades are the basis for the selling and purchasing of hardwood lumber," Cassens said. "This session will provide registrants with a quick understanding of grading concepts, terminology and wholesale pricing."

Attendees should bring a tape measure, calculator or a lumber grading rule to the workshop.

Registration for Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen’s Association members is $79, and the fee for nonmembers is $99.
