Student honors:

- A team of Purdue University civil engineering students has won first place in the 2014 International Bridge Contest, an annual event involving universities from Japan, the United States and Turkey in which students build and test bridge models until they fail. Students design the structures and build them out of everyday materials such as wood sticks, rope and Styrofoam. The team was made up of graduate students Aishwarya Puranam, Lucas Laughery, Yunlan Zhang, Derek Daluga, and Nicholas Skok; postdoctoral research associate Chungwook Sim; and undergraduates Jacob Bubalo, Sarah Paulsen, and Samuel Magers. A YouTube video shows the team at work. The students were advised by Santiago Pujol, an associate professor of civil engineering. Also providing guidance were associate professor Ayhan Irfanoglu, and assistant professors Mohammad Jahanshahi and Arun Prakash.
