WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University professor of agronomy Sylvie Brouder has been appointed to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Science Advisory Board.
The board, established by Congress in 1978, provides independent advice on technical issues to the administrator of the EPA. It also reviews the quality and relevance of scientific and technical information used by the agency in proposing policies and regulations.
Brouder, who is also a Wickersham Chair of Excellence in Agricultural Research, was appointed a member of the board following a rigorous selection process and will provide expertise on ecological and agricultural issues. She will serve through September 2017.
Her research at Purdue focuses on crop nutrition and soil fertility, and she provides technical information on plant nutrition, nutrient management and cropping systems to farmers, county educators and industry. She also studies carbon and nitrogen cycling, soil sequestration, the relationship between roots and soil, greenhouse gas emissions and water quality impacts of intensively managed agricultural systems.
Brouder is the director of the Water Quality Field Station, a unique resource that helps researchers develop eco-friendly technology for crop production by identifying practices that reduce the transport of agricultural chemicals into the water supply.
"Sylvie Brouder is one of a handful of agronomists across the country who fully understands the production systems of our farmers and the limitations they farm under," said Otto Doering, professor of agricultural economics and former member of the EPA Science Advisory Board. "She is well respected among agronomists and represents the best of the agricultural research community in her understanding of the basic science and what it means on the ground."
