U.S. Agriculture Secretary Vilsack to address students and public, tour Purdue labs

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will visit Purdue University on Monday and Tuesday (Nov. 17 and 18). On Monday he will speak as part of Purdue’s Fall 2014 Presidential Lecture Series, while on Tuesday he will join university President Mitch Daniels for a series of lab tours and briefings on university research that will conclude with a news media availability.

Vilsack’s Monday keynote address, which is free and open to the public, will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. Television crews and photographers covering the lecture must check in with Keith Robinson or Abby Eddy at the entrance to the theater for instructions.

On Tuesday, Vilsack and Daniels will hold a media availability from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Mann Hall atrium. Mann Hall is located at 203 S. Martin Jischke Drive.

Prior to the availability, Vilsack will join Daniels on a series of tours and briefings during which media will be able to shoot photos and B-roll, but there will be no media interview opportunities at that time. Tour times and locations include:

* 10:10-10:20 a.m., Mass spectrometry facility in Bindley Bioscience Center, Room 134. Bruce Cooper, metabolite profiling facility application research specialist, will talk about the mass spectrometry facility and how it relates to biofuels.

* 10:25-10:40 a.m., Birck Nanotechnology Center. Ali Shakouri, the Mary Jo and Robert L. Kirk Director of the Birck Nanotechnology Center and professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Demitrios Peroulis, deputy director of the Birck Nanotechnology Center and professor of electrical and computer engineering, will discuss sensors and advanced manufacturing and their importance in agriculture.

* 10:50-11:40 a.m., Mann Hall, Room 203. Briefing on Purdue Extension/Rural Economic Development/Purdue Foundry: Jason Henderson, associate dean of the College of Agriculture and Purdue Extension director, will lead the session that will include Dan Hasler, president and CEO of the Purdue Research Foundation; Bo Beaulieu, director of the Purdue Center for Regional Development and assistant director of Purdue Extension; and Greg Deason, vice president and executive director of the Purdue Foundry.
