October 28, 2014
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Former chairman of the Democratic National Committee Howard Dean and former chairman of the Republican National Committee Michael Steele will participate in a debate on Nov. 20 at Purdue University.
"Face Off: Washington Comes to West Lafayette" will be moderated by Steve Scully, political editor at C-SPAN. The event, organized by the Purdue Institute for Civic Communication, is 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom. It is free and open to the public.
"Mid-term elections will have just passed and the nation will be looking toward the 2016 presidential election, so this is a great opportunity to have these top party representatives on campus fielding questions from the community," said Carolyn Curiel, PICC executive director.
Dean was a presidential candidate in the 2004 campaign, a former member of the Vermont House of Representatives and governor of Vermont from 1991-2003. He also served as 50th chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2005-2009.
Steele was the seventh lieutenant governor of Maryland from 2003-2007 and the 64th chairman of the Republican National Committee from 2009-2011. Currently he serves as a political analyst for MSNBC.
Scully is political editor and a senior executive producer for C-SPAN and a host of its show, the Washington Journal. From 2006-2007 he served as the president of the White House Correspondents Association. He also is a contributing instructor in classes Curiel teaches on media and policy issues.
The Purdue Institute for Civic Communication, the event sponsor, is a nonpartisan, university-wide initiative in experiential and applied learning. Through classes and in forums planned and produced by students, the institute brings real-world communication and policy leaders together with students.
Sponsored by the Bill Daniels Fund of Denver, the institute is led by Curiel, who also is a clinical professor in the Brian Lamb School of Communication and former journalist, White House speechwriter and U.S. ambassador.
