Life science firm AsedaSciences joins Purdue Research Park

May 30, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Professionals in the pharmaceutical, academic research, agricultural and other life science sectors could benefit from making critical decisions early in the drug discovery process.

AsedaSciences Inc., a tenant in Purdue Research Park of West Lafayette, is launching the first of a series of human cell-based phenotypic screens that assess the biological effect of compounds developed during the drug discovery process. President and co-founder Brad Calvin said the company's phenotypic screening services simultaneously assess a compound's effect on multiple biochemical and physiological cellular parameters.

"Our SYSTEMETRIC™ approach delivers high-content, high-value information that is analyzed using our state-of-the-art algorithms, taking complex information and visualizing it effectively," he said. "This allows us to deliver detailed analytics that enable well-informed decisions around compound risk earlier in the drug discovery process."

Calvin said AsedaSciences also separates proteins at the isoform level in their native state and at preparative scale.

"We have a vertically integrated approach to cascade from phenotypic screens to protein isoform isolation that allows for follow-up analysis such as target identification and binding kinetics," he said. "Understanding the protein isoforms that bind candidate compounds can be critical in determining efficacy and identifying undesirable off-target effects."

AsedaSciences also markets Free Flow Electrophoresis (FFE) technology developed by Germany-based FFE Service GmbH. The technology separates and isolates protein isoforms in their natural state.

"We can provide support to clients who purchase the FFE technology, or we can return separated fractions from samples provided to us," Calvin said.

Calvin said AsedaSciences chose to become a tenant in Purdue Research Park because it provides access to technical and scientific talent at Purdue University.

"Scientific talent is particularly essential for a startup offering sophisticated biological screening services where quality and reproducibility are of paramount importance," he said. "Purdue Research Park provides AsedaSciences diversity of talent in biology, chemistry, mathematics and computer sciences needed to form the solid foundation from which we will deliver a strong pipeline of exciting products valued by the industries we serve."
