Weather forces Purdue to suspend normal operations

January 5, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University officials announced that due to current and predicted adverse weather conditions, normal operations have been suspended on the West Lafayette campus.

Staff members predesignated as "essential personnel" should follow their departmental procedures, and nonessential personnel should not report to campus, beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 5) and continuing for all shifts on Monday (Jan. 6).

The suspension does not affect students, who are not scheduled to begin classes following winter break until Monday (Jan. 13). University Residences plans to open remaining halls for returning students as planned at 8 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 7).

Some personnel are required to report for campus duty to maintain the university's essential operations. In general, essential personnel are part of environmental health and public safety, physical facilities, residence halls, Purdue Memorial Union (especially food workers), and those responsible for animal care.

The Córdova Recreational Sports Center will be closed Monday (Jan. 6). Users should check the Division of Recreational Sports website for updated operational hours. The Ben and Maxine Miller Child Development Laboratory School, in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, also will be closed Monday (Jan. 6).

University officials are monitoring area road conditions - and encourage employees to do the same - to remain aware of any local travel restrictions that might be put in place as the winter storm develops. Those planning to travel on area roads should monitor their county travel status by going online to http://www.in.gov/dhs/traveladvisory/

Purdue's adverse weather policy is available online at http://www.purdue.edu/policies/facilities-safety/iva6.html, and employees with questions about their work status can contact their supervisors.

Purdue officials also are working in conjunction with local and state emergency responders to provide assistance locally.

Any additional updates will be available on the Purdue home page at http://www.purdue.edu.
