Purdue fire department to participate in joint exercise Thursday (Feb. 13)

February 11, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Fire Department, along with hazardous materials teams from Lafayette and Tippecanoe Co., will participate in a joint exercise with the Indiana National Guard 53rd Civil Support Team on Thursday (Feb. 13).

This is the first time local hazmat teams will have the opportunity to exercise with the 53rd Civil Support Team, a group trained to respond to chemical, nuclear and biological incidents.

Thursday's exercise will simulate a scenario on the Purdue University campus. The goal of the training is to better prepare the agencies involved by fostering cooperation and integration while improving each individual team's emergency response and civil support skills.

The training exercise will take place at the Purdue University Airport (1501 Aviation Drive) from approximately 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The airport will remain open during the exercise. Digital signage will alert those in the area of additional traffic to and from the airport. Other areas of campus will not be affected.
