Purdue's new Center for Healthy Living opens

February 26, 2013

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Center for Healthy Living will open Wednesday (Feb. 27) in the Purdue West Shopping Center, 1400 W. State St.

Serving benefits-eligible employees and their dependents covered on the Purdue Choice Fund, Purdue Incentive or Purdue Copay medical plans, the center will offer a wide range of services to treat common illnesses and promote health and wellness. Center hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

"The Center for Healthy Living will provide quality health care that is convenient and cost-effective," said Purdue President Mitch Daniels. "This facility has been designed to take a holistic approach by offering services and programs that will allow users to take a proactive role in managing their overall health."

A full-time physician and nurse practitioners will lead four teams providing health care at the center. In addition to a doctor or nurse practitioner, each team will have a registered nurse-health coach and a medical assistant. Employees and dependents using the center will see the same health team on each visit, allowing the team to get to know the client and become familiar with their health and wellness goals. When an employee already has a primary care provider in the community, the provider may refer the employee to the center for services and education.

The Center for Healthy Living staff will include a wellness coordinator, employee assistance counselor, a registered dietitian who is a certified diabetes educator, and a pharmacist with special training to help clients manage their medications.

Luis E. Lewin, Purdue's vice president for human resources, said that wait times at the center should be shorter than employees generally experience at the doctor's office, and the Purdue West location may mean less traveling time to get care.

"In addition to those benefits, staff at the center will get to know clients and offer options that go beyond just treating symptoms," Lewin said. "The goal is to find health care solutions that empower people and work within the context of their everyday lives."

CHS Health Services, which has been designing and operating onsite workplace health centers since 1975, will operate the center for Purdue.

A Tier 1 lab, now located at 1601 W. State St., will move to the Center for Healthy Living. The lab, which provides services through Mid America Clinical Laboratories, will be open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Employees and eligible family members may book appointments now for Feb. 27 and beyond. To schedule an appointment, call 765-494-0111. Appointments are recommended, and walk-ins will be welcome. Beginning in early March, clients will have the option to schedule appointments online.
