On Wednesday (Oct. 14) Purdue students had the opportunity to direct $1,000 of charitable contributions to deserving campus units. The Purdue Foundation Student Board (PFSB) and University Development Office hosted a campus-wide celebration during which students had the chance to decide which four areas of campus will receive $250 each in donations.

“This is an exciting time to be a Purdue student,” said Luke Nolting, a senior business management major and vice president of events for PFSB. “Our campus is a vibrant and welcoming place that is full of opportunity. We’re excited to offer this chance to support Purdue in such an impactful way.”

Students voted at the event on Memorial Mall to determine which programs and organizations will receive a gift. Besides $1,000 in charitable contributions, the Purdue Foundation Student Board and development office also offered special Purdue giveaways, free treats and photo opportunities.

"The event is not only a chance for students to get involved in deciding the fate of these donations, but it’s also a thank you for their participation in some of our university’s biggest fundraising initiatives," said Alyssa Begle, a senior in speech, language and hearing sciences and PFSB president.

The last opportunity students had to be so involved in giving back to campus, they responded in record numbers. The 2015 Purdue Day of Giving raised $13.7 million in 24 hours, the largest total for a single-day fundraising campaign in all of higher education. More than 9,500 donations from students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Purdue contributed to the historic achievement. All of the money raised during the April event was distributed among 45 participating units and programs, including the Purdue Scholarship Fund.
