Purdue University President Mitch Daniels on Oct. 25 began a five-day trip to Hong Kong and India to encourage collaborative research and partnerships and stronger ties with alumni and to create more international internship and engagement opportunities for current Purdue students.

While in Hong Kong, Daniels on Oct. 27 spoke at the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce and participated in a discussion titled "An Update from America."

Daniels and Suresh Garimella, Purdue executive vice president for research and partnerships and Goodson Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering, also both spoke at a luncheon and then participated in a panel discussion, "From Classroom to Lab to Boardroom," on Oct. 26 at the Hong Kong Science Park, which houses over 500 technology companies. Allen Yeung, government chief information officer, HKSAR Government, who received a master's degree (1987) in electrical and computer engineering from Purdue, made opening remarks. Charles Mok, a Legislative Council member who received a bachelor's degree (1985) in computer and electrical engineering and a master's degree (1987) in electrical engineering from Purdue,  moderated the discussion. Another panelist was Patrick Wang, chair and CEO of Johnson Electric Holdings Limited. He received bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical and materials engineering from Purdue in 1972 and also received an honorary doctorate in 2004. An alumni event hosted by the Purdue Alumni Association followed the panel discussion.
