Information for Students/Parents
Some things can’t be learned in a traditional classroom environment, and this is especially true regarding design disciplines. The Purdue co-op program is the only managed co-operative internship program in the country that embeds a student in a professional landscape architecture office for a full year (or longer—up to 14 months) to experience the realities of the profession in a hands-on environment.
The co-op experience is a requirement of the Purdue landscape architecture program and is much more than a standard summer internship. Students learn how to solve design challenges for real projects complete with client interaction and practical constraints instead of “textbook” versions of a project traditionally offered in a classroom. This process allows students to gain:
- professional experience for a stronger design outlook, improving senior year projects post-immersion into real-world constraints
- experience under a practicing licensed landscape architect for 40 (or more) contiguous weeks provides personal mentorship and guidance
- a year of experience towards licensure (states require an apprenticeship period before sitting for the registration exam)
Graduates from Purdue landscape architecture are in high demand due to the programs high ranking and strong reputation in award winning firms around the world. This has helped drive 100% placement for students in the program for over 30 years. Faculty supported placement guides students towards best firm for their personal interests and abilities and assures that students are paid a living wage. Students are supported throughout the co-op year, meaning that students are not answering phones or getting coffee, they’re immersed in all aspects of professional practice. Regular check-ins from the co-op director assure that students are treated fairly and equitably.
The managed co-op process allows students to:
- get paid while completing a year of study instead of paying tuition
- have a standing job offer before starting the senior year of study (87% of students are presented with an offer to return to their co-op firm)
- work on projects that foster growth and experience in areas of personal interest
- experience a new city, climate, and culture across the United States
- develop a more robust portfolio with actual professional projects
