Problem 3.2 discussion

DISCUSSION

Remember the Four-Step plan:

  1. Equilibrium: Draw an FBD of bar BCDH and write down the equilibrium equation(s) from this FBD.
  2. Force/elongation equations: Write down the force/elongation equation for each member:  ei = FiLi/EiA+ αiΔTLi.
  3. Compatibility equations:  Write down the elongation/displacement compatibility equation relating the elongations of rods (1) and (2). Be careful with signs in developing this equation. In setting up this equation, you may want to go over the review material on Axially-loaded members link on the Wednesday, September 10 entry on the Daily Schedule page of the course website.
  4. Solve: Solve the equations generated in Steps 1-3 for the temperature change ΔT in the two rods.

You are asked to provide your answers in the appropriate parts a)-f) as asked in the problem statement.

Ask/answer questions in the discussion thread below.

  1. Several students have asked about part (f) of the question: the DeltaT for this question can be negative (even though the original drawing mentions that DeltaT is >0).
