Discussion: The above is an animation of the motion for pin P, showing its velocity and acceleration vectors. The components of these vectors are found from time differentiation of the x- and y-components of the position of P. From this animation, we can observe:

  • The velocity for P is always tangent to the path of P.
  • The acceleration vector for P is neither tangent nor perpendicular to path of P. However, the acceleration vector always points inward relative to the path.

These are observations that we will justify in the next section of the course material.
