FREESTYLE

The FREESTYLETM machine is used to form M-TOW® (overbraided composite tow) into any desired shape and is synonymous to metal roll forming methods. The transfer system has different segments of localized heating combined with 5-axis shaping capabilities allowing virtually any geometry to be created. The created M-TOW® preform will be used as insert in subsequent composite molding processes. The method is a free-forming method, no mold required, raises the issues of dimensional and forming accuracy, which highlights our research focus in this area. The FREESTYLETMprocess is used to develop and establish manufacturing guidelines for forming functionalized composites (M-TOW®) into 3D shapes. Our functionalized M-TOW® includes tubing (air and liquid transport), wiring, and sensing (optical and piezoelectric) to be introduced into the final molded part.
