Emergency personnel may find themselves dealing with situations involving farm livestock. Vehicle accidents, fires, or simply a farm gate left open can lead to farm animals creating a challenge for responders, especially if they have little or no experience with livestock. These incidents aren’t limited to rural areas, as stories of livestock escaping an accident scene in a city or on a busy interstate highway are common.

For this reason, Purdue Extension will be hosting a free webinar for law enforcement, emergency services, and first responders who might someday be involved with livestock-related incidents. The program provides a basic understanding of farm animal behavior and handling so that responders will be better prepared for such a situation. The online program will be held Tuesday, December 15 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. EST via Zoom.

Speakers for the program include Dr. Ron Lemenager, Purdue University Extension Beef Specialist, and Mark Kepler, Purdue Extension Agriculture Educator in Fulton County, Indiana. In addition to their Extension responsibilities, both speakers own and operate livestock farms and have decades of animal-related experience.

This program is sponsored by the Area V Extension Agriculture/Natural Resources Educator team (Greene, Sullivan, Vigo, Clay, Putnam, Owen, Monroe, Parke, and Vermillion Counties).

Please register for the program by December 11 at the link provided above.
