The Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has two Elective Classifications: Community Engagement and Leadership for Public Purpose. Unlike the Basic Carnegie Classifications (R1, R2, etc.), Elective Classifications must be applied for and receive designation based on Carnegie’s review of application.

Engagement in Indianapolis

A great opportunity arises with Purdue’s presence in Indianapolis. Our community engagement approach will include strategies aimed at understanding the community’s specific cultural and historical context. Unlike traditional planning, we intend to amplify the cultural legacy of the area. In other words, having a robust community engagement plan will ensure that Purdue in Indianapolis has a broad, sustainable impact but more importantly, is genuinely perceived as a relevant community partner.

It serves as a foundational document across all three of the Office’s professional development programs. Collectively, these resources have helped pave the way for faculty advancement at Purdue.

Engagement Activities in Elements

The Engagement Decision Tree for Elements is a Purdue guide that helps faculty and staff determine whether an activity qualifies as “engagement.” It clarifies how to tag activities in Elements so that Purdue can capture the breadth and impact of partnerships, collaborations, and community-focused work across the university.

Engagement's Impact (2024)

2024 marked a period of significant advancement for the Office of Engagement. While the notion of engagement may be abstract, its effects resonate profoundly across our campus, the state, and the global community. Our endeavors in 2024 were directed toward upholding Purdue’s esteemed legacy as a land-grant institution, while also providing support and clarity to previously unrecognized forms of engagement.
