What we’re reading this week – Sept. 28, 2018

An Ink Factory illustration demonstrating the dawn and doom aspects of technology.

Leading up to the fifth Dawn or Doom conference, the Dawn or Doom crew of writers, marketers and interns will be sharing some of their favorite dawn or doom-esque stories that both inspire and scare us. To better understand the nuanced landscape of technology, we’re reading about all the ways artificial intelligence, algorithms, drones, cyber security and the internet are shaping our lives.

Preparation for Dawn or Doom is in full swing. This year, the conference is part of Purdue's Giant Leaps Sesquicentennial Campaign and is the centerpiece of the Ideas Festival theme “Giant Leaps in Artificial Intelligence, Algorithms, and Automation: Balancing Humanity and Technology,” so of course AI has been on our minds lately. We are looking forward to hearing about AI at the conference, but first there are big moves in the world of AI being made right now. Here is what we have been reading this week.

The good

IBM's Unbiased Approach to AI Discrimination

Racial bias is an issue that has woven its way into many aspects of out society, however, some researchers are determined to make sure it is not a part of Artificial Intelligence.

Google is using AI to predict floods in India and warn users

Although AI can’t stop natural disasters (yet) what if it could help warn people about them sooner?

The neutral

How AI is quietly shaping your next investment vehicle

With AI developing so rapidly it may have more of an effect on our decision-making than we think.

The bad

All the things that still baffle self-driving cars, starting with seagulls

Before humans give up driving for good, self-driving cars will need to learn to avoid the most basic threats to driving on the road.

Is Artificial Intelligence Replacing Jobs In Banking?

The more we improve AI the more it has the ability to mimic human functions, so what does this mean in terms of workers’ jobs?
