Adding a PUID to a Realm

Adding a PUID to a Realm makes a person known to a realm.

A realm can be many things: an departmental computer account, access to University e-mail services, or perhaps the right to look at the web pages for a class. Adding a PUID to the realm means the service has a way to verify that a particular PUID has the means to identify itself to the realm.

For example, suppose a class has a realm that provides web pages to Purdue people taking the class. If a PUID belongs to the class, it would be possible using the SWI to add that PUID to the web page realm.

To add a person to the realm:

  1. Select the PUID. This can be accomplished by either searching for the person by name and then examining the detailed information for that person, or by entering the PUID or alias on the Find by PUID/Alias panel.

  2. From the home page, select the Join Selected User to a Realm option. The Join to Realm panel is displayed.

In this example, the user madsenj (PUID 00107-39648) has been selected. The panel shows a single realm available: pete.

  3. Select the realm (if more than one realm is available you can add the selected PUID to multiple realms by holding down the CTRL key and clicking on additional realms) and enter a password for the realm or realms. You have to enter the password twice; this helps to insure that you don't make an error setting the password for the PUID.

To complete the Join operation, click on the Join PUID to Realm button.

  4. The Secure Web Interface completes the operation and displays a confirmation panel.

You can return to the SWI home page by selecting the Home link.

Note: The right to join or remove a PUID from a realm is controlled by I2A2. If you don't have the right to add or remove someone from a realm, the Secure Web Interface will not display this option.
