In the early 1900s, to coincide with the end of classes each May, Purdue's student body staged a day of elaborate events that included the Purdue Circus and May Day activities.
Two committees of seniors traditionally coordinated the festivities, which were first held in 1913 and were open for anyone to attend. The day began with a morning parade and progressed to May Day activities, circus sideshows and an evening circus performance, according to a paper by David Hovde, associate professor of library science.
Faculty and staff news
Sports physicals are available at the Center for Healthy Living for just $30 for dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan. For added convenience, faculty and staff may use their PayFlex debit cards to pay for the sports physical from their health savings account (HSA) or health care flexible spending account (FSA).
Human Resources has announced winners from Value Your Health Week, which was March 31-April 4.
The Physical Facilities Grounds Department will mark all abandoned, improperly parked and/or broken-down bicycles for removal this week. Individuals who keep a bicycle on campus are advised to check their bicycle to be sure it was not tagged for removal before Monday (May 12), when removal of the marked bicycles will begin.
Purdue Today summer schedule
Purdue Today will reduce its publishing schedule Monday (May 12) through Aug. 15. Regular publishing days during the summer will be Monday and Thursday. Daily publication will resume Aug. 18.

U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Purdue President Mitch Daniels will sign a statement of cooperation between the Department of the Navy and Purdue at 1:30 p.m. today (May 8), agreeing to further develop and strengthen an existing research relationship aimed at enhancing and implementing alternative energy resources. The event will be available via live streaming.

A team of Purdue researchers is studying how cover crops and controlled drainage of water might help agriculture become more resilient to the stresses of variable weather and climate as farmers adapt to long-term issues such as those reported in the third National Climate Assessment.

Instructors and resident assistants recently received awards from the Student Success at Purdue office in recognition of their outstanding service to and advocacy of the University's learning communities.
Purdue will award 13 honorary doctorate degrees during spring commencement ceremonies at the West Lafayette campus this month.
A Purdue student team has won a national contest for designing a "Biowall" of living plants integrated into a building's heating and ventilation system.
Purdue sports
Purdue's Adam Schenk and Austin Eoff were named to the men's golf second-team All-Big Ten squad, the league office announced Wednesday (May 7).
In addition to finding continued success on the court, the Purdue volleyball team received the NCAA Public Recognition Award for posting a multi-year academic progress rate among the top 10 percent of its sport. The Boilermakers are receiving the award for the ninth straight season.
