Green tailgating

Recycling initiative helping tailgaters think green

The Black & Gold & Green Tailgating Team is making green the new color of Purdue tailgating through its home game recycling initiative. University Sustainability sponsors the tailgating team, which educates tailgaters about the recycling program at Purdue while handing out recycling bags before each home game begins. The team's goal is to keep 50 percent of game-day waste diverted from landfills.

The Black & Gold & Green Tailgating Team will be out this Saturday (Oct. 12) before Purdue takes on Nebraska at noon at Ross-Ade Stadium.

BCC trip

Photo gallery: BCC research tour
focuses on Gullah culture, heritage

Students from the Black Cultural Center's performing arts ensembles watch sweetgrass basket maker Jery Bennett-Taylor demonstrate a sweetgrass sewing technique during their research tour to Savannah, Ga., and St. Helena Island, S.C., on Oct. 4-8. The trip provided the students with a cultural immersion experience to learn about preservation of the Gullah heritage through music, poetry, dance and dramatization of rituals that shape Gullah culture.

The origin of the Gullah culture is connected to the trans-Atlantic slave trade, says Renee Thomas, director of the BCC. Many enslaved Africans labored on the sea island rice plantations, lived for several centuries in relative isolation and maintained strong community life. That allowed them to preserve more of their African culture than any other group of blacks in the U.S. The exploration of Gullah culture is the focus of the BCC's Fall Cultural Arts Series. The series culminates on Dec. 6 with the Cultural Arts Festival, the students' artistic response to what they learned on the research tour.
