Purdue Day at the Indiana State Fair on Friday (Aug. 9) featured more than 30 tents and exhibits as well as a cooking demonstration with one of Purdue's top chefs, a student-designed one-quarter-scale tractor and a performance by Purdue Musical Organizations. Exhibits by Purdue Extension and the academic areas of agriculture, health and human sciences, and veterinary medicine will remain in place throughout the fair, which runs through Aug. 18.
Faculty and staff news
The $500 per person tobacco-user additional premium will continue for 2014 Purdue medical plans. The additional premium applies to employees and covered spouses/same-sex domestic partners. If both people in the couple use tobacco and are covered by the plan, the additional premium will be $1,000.
Last spring, Professor Daphene Koch used Course Signals to boost student achievement in her freshman-level course. This month, Koch will be helping other faculty members utilize the tool, which offers students early warnings about potential problems in a course and guidance for getting help, during two Aug. 15 training sessions. Faculty are encouraged to reserve a seat through the ITaP training calendar.
The Clerical and Service Staff Advisory Committee (CSSAC) is now accepting nominations for the first CSSAC Excellence Award, which will recognize clerical and service staff members who perform at outstanding levels. Nominations will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Aug. 16.

General news
Boiler Gold Rush, the Purdue new student orientation program involving about 5,500 new students, this year features an expanded program for international students and enhancements of components added to last year's event.
The new home for Purdue Musical Organizations, under construction, will feature large and small rehearsal rooms, a student lounge and study area, a music library and environmentally controlled storage space, said PMO director William Griffel.

Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis will be a sea of gold and black as Purdue fans gather for the Boilermaker Tailgate on the Circle on Aug. 30.
