Nestled in a small corner of Nelson Hall of Food Science's basement is a beautifully furnished, cave-shaped room best described as a wine cellar. The Richard P. Vine Enology Library, as it's officially called, was built in 1999 using a donation from Forest Glen Winery in Sonoma, Calif. Fred Franzia, the winery's owner, wanted the Indiana Wine Grape Council to use the library to promote wine education.

Faculty and staff news
Faculty and staff who still have retirement funds with TIAA-CREF should watch for a letter from the company next week. The letter will be sent to the employee's home address and will announce lowered costs for money invested with CREF.
The Global Policy Research Institute is accepting submissions of policy briefs for its Policy Briefs Incentive Award Solicitation. Details are available in a PDF file, and an information session is scheduled for 11 a.m.-noon on Jan. 17 in Brown Laboratory of Chemistry, Room 3106. Traffic signals on State Street (State Road 26) at Martin Jischke Drive and Russell Street may receive work between 10 and 11 a.m. today (Jan. 11), according to INDOT, the Indiana Department of Transportation. Also, INDOT is advising that the new bypass section of U.S. 231 remains under construction, and individuals who go onto the closed areas risk arrest.
As of Jan. 2, Purdue's Parking Facilities office has a new location at 1404 W. State St. The former office, which was located on Northwestern Avenue, closed on Dec. 28.

Doctors soon may be using a system in the operating room that recognizes hand gestures as commands to tell a computer to browse and display medical images of the patient during a surgery.
