Simple method strengthens schools, other buildings against earthquakes

Large-Scale Civil
Engineering Research

Civil engineers using a specialized laboratory at Purdue have demonstrated the effectiveness of a simple, inexpensive method to strengthen buildings that have a flaw making them dangerously vulnerable to earthquakes. The flaw is widespread in China, Latin America, Turkey and other countries. The buildings have too many "partial-height" walls between structural columns and could be easily strengthened by replacing some windows with ordinary masonry bricks, said Santiago Pujol, assistant professor of civil engineering at Purdue. Today's tip:
Wellness

Make olive oil and other plant-based oils like canola oil the staple fats in your diet. One way to accomplish this is by sauteing vegetables in heart-healthy olive oil rather than flavoring with LDL cholesterol-raising butters and margarines.
