Purdue gallery to feature 'Sad Girl/Clever Boy' project

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A collaborative performance-based exhibit will be on display through Feb. 20 in the West Gallery of the Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries located in Purdue's Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts.

"Sad Girl/Clever Boy" is a project that seeks to explore two popular trends among emerging contemporary artists, mainly post-feminist representation in female artists and prolonged or glorified adolescence in male artists.

Katherine Cunningham, a visiting instructor of photography and related media, engaged in performances around the Lafayette area for six weeks. She followed two rules. The first was to follow the directives stated each week by Sad Girl, Tarrah Krajnak, an artist and educator based in Burlington, Vt., and Clever Boy, Ryan Jones, a sculptor and photographer based in San Francisco. The second rule was that Sad Girl and Clever Boy were in complete control.

An opening reception, featuring a series of live performances by Cunningham, will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 12) in the gallery. She also will give a Brown Bag Lecture on the project at noon Feb. 19 in the West Gallery.

The galleries are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.
