Leading up to the inauguration, Purdue Today will take a look at Purdue's past leaders. Today, our seventh president, Frederick L. Hovde. Presidents of Purdue's past:

Frederick L. Hovde came to Purdue at age 37 and presided over the University's greatest period of growth, leading to its emergence as a top research university. During his 25-year leadership, Purdue saw its greatest enrollment growth -- from 5,628 to 25,582 students. Its annual budget increased from $12.7 million to $136 million. Hovde retired in 1971 as the University's longest-serving president. While he was president, Purdue established the schools of industrial engineering, management, materials engineering, technology, and veterinary medicine. In 1975, the Purdue Executive Building was renamed the Frederick L. Hovde Hall of Administration in his honor.

A Purdue alumnus on Sunday (April 6) kicked off the university's presidential inauguration week with a pledge of $4 million to help build a new home for Purdue Musical Organizations. More
The Purdue Research Park will break ground at 2:30 p.m. today (April 7) on a nearly 13-acre expansion for which the wife of a Purdue alumnus has donated $3 million to help fund a new technology center. More
A Jeffersonville, Ind.-based foundation has given $1 million to the Purdue College of Technology at New Albany to establish advanced-technology laboratories for two of the college's programs. More
-- Mike Loizzo began March 24 as news director for WBAA.
-- Pedro Irazoqui, an assistant professor in biomedical engineering, received the Marion B. Scott Award from the Indiana Alpha Chapter of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society for his dedication to teaching excellence.
-- Michel Schweinsberg, graphic arts technician for the Center for Paralysis Research, won the campuswide Purdue Camera Club Research Competition.
-- Michael Beyerlein, professor and head of Purdue's Department of Organizational Leadership and Supervision, is one of the editors of "The Handbook of High Performance Virtual Teams: A Toolkit for Collaborating Across Boundaries," published this month by John Wiley & Sons.
