April 4, 2008 Appointments, honors and activitiesAppointments and promotions:— Mike Loizzo began March 24 as news director for WBAA. Loizzo has been a host and news producer at the station since July 2005. He also has worked as a news reporter and producer for other public radio and commercial television stations. He received his bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and a master's degree from the University of Illinois-Springfield. Campus activities: — The Housing and Food Services Diversity Work Group will sponsor the last Cultural Night at Windsor Dining Court of the semester from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday (April 9). An interactive display in the foyer will highlight Asian-American and Pacific Islander history and heritage. The night's menu will feature Asian cuisine. — Housing and Food Services will dedicate the new Page Dining Room at the Ford Dining Court at 4:30 p.m. April 11. The room is being named for Bob Page, former assistant vice president for Housing and Food Services. As director of Residence Halls in the 1960s, Page led the consolidation of the men's and women's residence halls systems, paving the way for the current University Residences system. — Housing and Food Services' Latino employees are encouraged to attend a joint meeting of Housing and Food Services and the Latino Faculty and Staff Association at 3 p.m. April 16 at the Hillenbrand Residence Hall Atrium. Attendees will be able to network with employees of other divisions. Morgan R. Olsen, Purdue treasurer and executive vice president, will share information on a diversity initiative his office has begun. Faculty and staff honors: — Pedro Irazoqui, an assistant professor in biomedical engineering, received the Marion B. Scott Award from the Indiana Alpha Chapter of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society for his dedication to teaching excellence. — Michel Schweinsberg, graphic arts technician for the Center for Paralysis Research, won the campuswide Purdue Camera Club Research Competition. Schweinsberg won the overall grand prize. (DK) — Michael Beyerlein, professor and head of Purdue's Department of Organizational Leadership and Supervision, is one of the editors of "The Handbook of High Performance Virtual Teams: A Toolkit for Collaborating Across Boundaries," published this month by John Wiley & Sons. Other editors are Susan Beyerlein, Jill Nemiro and Lori Bradley. Student honors: — Xiaohui Guo, a doctoral student in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, earned the Amelia Earhart Fellowship, which is granted annually to women pursuing graduate degrees in the aerospace-related sciences and engineering. Her research interests are simulations of rarefied gas flows and gas-surface interactions in microdevices. — The Indiana Interdisciplinary GK-12, a program at Discovery Learning Center in which graduate students from science, technology, engineering and mathematics work with middle school teachers and students in Frankfort, Lafayette and Tippecanoe County, won a Web site award at the National Science Foundation national conference in March. The National Science Foundation funds the Purdue program and it was one of more than 120 active GK-12 programs in attendance at the national conference. The award was give to the project that best incorporated participant information, lesson plan materials and the overall NSF GK-12 mission. Through the National Science Foundation, each graduate student receives a fellowship to support their research and work with local teachers to support math and science teaching and classroom activities. Two fellows, Gayla Olbricht, a statistic major from Thayer, Mo., and Adam Santone, a computer graphics technology major from Monroe, La., were selected for the graduate student research poster session at the conference. Another fellow, Jody Riskowski, a biomedical engineering major from Indianapolis, was selected to present a lesson unit.
