Purdue researchers obtain a snapshot clarifying how materials enter cells

Bringing nutrients into cells
A group of Purdue researchers has captured a key step in the metabolic process that allows materials, such as nutrients and drug treatments, to move in and out of cells.

A research team led by Jue Chen, an associate professor of biological sciences, obtained a snapshot of the tiny protein gate complex that opens and closes pathways through the protective cellular membrane. The gates, operated by small protein machines that push them open and closed, bring nutrients into the cell and flush out waste. More

Purdue research, programs identify and meet needs of Asian families

A group of Purdue international graduate students is reaching out to classmates who are raising families in a foreign culture while pursuing a degree.

After conducting research to identify the challenges and stresses faced by Asian graduate students who also are parents, the group has developed a resource list and programming aimed at educating young families on topics ranging from cultural differences to understanding the U.S. public school system.

Director named for Purdue's $100 million Alfred Mann Institute for Biomedical Development

A former president and CEO of an international producer of medical devices will serve as the executive director of the Alfred Mann Institute for Biomedical Development at Purdue.

Purdue and Purdue Research Foundation officials announced Friday (Nov. 30) that John C. Hertig, the former president and CEO of Enpath Medical Inc. in Minneapolis, will be the institute's inaugural executive director. The Purdue engineering alumnus begins his duties today (Dec. 3). More

Appointments, honors and activities

— Brian Dillman, an assistant professor of aviation technology, has received the UAA John Lauber Safety Award.
— John Young, a professor of aviation technology, began a year of service as the president of the University Aviation Association, taking over the leadership role at the organization's recent annual meeting in San Jose, Calif.
— James Foster, University Residences diversity and community coordinator, received the regional Diversity Program of the Month award from the National Association of College and University Residence Halls for his training program for resident assistants.
— Janet Alsup, an associate professor of English, will receive the Mina P. Shaughnessy Prize from the Modern Language Association on Dec. 28 at the annual conference in Chicago. More

Purdue Student Union Board sponsors 'Holidays at the Union'

Purdue will usher in the holiday season beginning at noon today (Dec. 3) when the freshly cut tree arrives at the Purdue Memorial Union Great Hall.

"Bringing the tree into the Union is a fun event that helps put the entire campus into the holiday spirit," said Margie Stoltz, program manager at Purdue Memorial Union. "Holidays at the Union is a great way for Purdue and the local community to come together." More
