Purdue event to feature holidays around the world

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Holidays throughout the world will be highlighted during an event Wednesday (Dec. 5) at the Purdue Memorial Union.

A number of student groups and campus organizations will participate in the 1-6 p.m. event called "Holidays Around the World" in the North Ballroom of the Union. Purdue Student Union Board is the sponsor, and it is free and open to the public.

"In all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is easy to focus on traditions that are familiar," said Kaice LaFavers, director of cultural events for Purdue Student Union Board. "'Holidays Around the World' aims to increase awareness about holiday traditions throughout the world. It gives students, faculty and staff members an opportunity to share aspects of their culture with others in the community."

The event, which began in 2002, will feature a number of booths from student groups with information about their culture's holidays. Some also will offer crafts, LaFavers said.

This year, Purdue Memorial Union Dining Services and Housing and Food Services will provide international foods. Attendees also can sample teas, coffees and other drinks.

Student groups scheduled to participate include the Chinese Calligraphy Club, Korean American Student Association, Zeta Sigma Chi Multicultural Sorority, Sigma Delta Pi, Hillel, Hindu Students Council, American India Foundation, Italian Club, Black Cultural Center, Russian Club, Sigma Tau Delta and the Church of the Living God Campus Ministry. Staff members in Housing and Food Services, as well as Purdue Village's English for Speakers of Other Languages program, also are participating.
