Appointments, honors and activities

Campus activities:

— Laurence B. Leonard, Rachel E. Stark Distinguished Professor of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, will present "A Crosslinguistic View of Specific Language Impairment in Children" at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 in Stewart Center, Room 306. Leonard is the recipient of the 2007 Purdue Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award. Sigma Xi is a global science and engineering scholarly society that brings together scientists from across disciplines to exchange ideas. A reception will follow the lecture.

— Purdue's master planning consultants, Sasaki Associates, will provide an update on the status of the master planning process on the West Lafayette campus at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Stewart Center, Room 310. The updated master plan will encourage sustainable and accessible design, strengthen pedestrian orientation, enhance the campus landscape, accommodate parking needs and plan for and guide campus growth and development. The meeting is open to all in the campus community.

— Purdue University Visitor Information Center is holding a callout for volunteer campus tour guides at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Beering Hall, Room 2280. The center is looking for students who are confident, proud of Purdue, and have the "gift of gab."

 

Faculty and staff honors:

— Brian Dillman, an assistant professor of aviation technology, has received the UAA John Lauber Safety Award. The award recognizes achievement that demonstrates clear advancement of aviation safety by an individual or an organization. The award honors John K. Lauber, a pioneer in the field of aviation safety and human factors. Dillman's current research focuses on the development of aircraft databases, safety management systems, risk management, situational judgment and aeronautical decision-making.

— John Young, a professor of aviation technology, began a year of service as the president of the University Aviation Association, taking over the leadership role at the organization's recent annual meeting in San Jose, Calif.

— James Foster, University Residences diversity and community coordinator, received the regional Diversity Program of the Month award from the National Association of College and University Residence Halls for his training program for resident assistants. The training prompted each RA to create an action plan for their own continued diversity education an organize diversity programming for their students in on-campus residents.

— Janet Alsup, an associate professor of English, will receive the Mina P. Shaughnessy Prize from the Modern Language Association on Dec. 28 at the annual conference in Chicago. The award recognizes her book "Teacher Identity Discourses: Negotiating Personal and Professional Spaces."
