STATEMENT OF POLICY

Administrative Officers will be subject to Regular Review by their Supervisors on a periodic basis. The length of time between two consecutive Regular Reviews of an Administrative Officer will not exceed five years. The evaluation process will be comprehensive by addressing all dimensions of the administrator's responsibilities and considering input from all appropriate constituencies related to these responsibilities.

Administrative Officers will ensure that formal Regular Review processes are in place for their staff consistent with this Policy.

REASON FOR POLICY

Administrative Officers in academic and non-academic units are reviewed by their Supervisors who assess their performance on an annual basis to recognize accomplishment, provide feedback for improvement, and determine compensation. However, based on the diverse characteristics of these units and their operations, the scope and comprehensiveness of the annual review process vary widely.

This Policy formalizes a Regular Review of Administrative Officers to be conducted periodically by their Supervisors. These Regular Reviews will assess effectiveness in meeting strategic goals and administrative expectations and provide constructive observations and guidance for improvement. The Regular Reviews will also be instrumental in guiding professional growth and development.

DEFINITIONS

Word Definition
Administrative Officer Individuals in both academic and non-academic units who hold the title of Provost, Chancellor, Executive Vice President, Senior Vice President, Vice President, Vice Chancellor, Dean, Director, or Department Head.
Regular Review Periodic assessment of Administrative Officers and their direct reports that evaluates effectiveness in meeting strategic goals and administrative expectations and provides constructive observations and guidance for improvement.
Supervisors The individual to whom an Administrative Officer reports and who makes compensation recommendations for the Administrative Officer.

EXCLUSIONS

This Policy does not cover:

  • Temporary staff
  • Graduate student staff members

PROCEDURES

Each Administrative Officer and his/her Supervisor will determine the procedures for conducting the Regular Reviews. The Administrative Officers reporting to the President will attend to the need for consistency of these procedures across the various administrative units within their supervision.

These procedures will require approval by the President

SPECIAL SITUATIONS

Any deviation from this Policy requires approval by the President and the Board of Trustees.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Person Responsibility
Supervisor Create and conduct periodic Regular Review of all Administrative Officers. Maintain record of Regular Reviews. Provide the written Regular Review to the Administrative Officer and place a copy in the Administrative Officer's University personnel file in order to maintain the confidentiality of the Regular Review process. Forward written summaries of Regular Reviews to the President.
