December 17, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The annual Purdue Jazz Festival will kick off its 26th year with a performance by the DIVA Jazz Orchestra at 8 p.m. Jan. 22 at Loeb Playhouse. This performance is presented by Purdue Convocations

This performance also includes a free pre-show discussion for ticket holders at 7 p.m. Don Seybold, host of "Inside Jazz" on WBAA, and pianist Judd Danby will discuss DIVA's approach to big band music in Stewart Center, Room 310.

The DIVA Jazz Orchestra is a 15-woman orchestra that pushes traditional boundaries of jazz and swing. Founded in 1992 and led by drummer and music director Sherrie Maricle, the orchestra has held court everywhere from clubs to Carnegie Hall, performing in Paris, Rome and Berlin, as well as Tanglewood and the Montreal Jazz Festival.

The orchestra has shared stages with such luminaries as Dave Brubeck, Nancy Wilson, Diane Schuur, Rosemary Clooney, Clark Terry, Randy Brecker and Dee Dee Bridgewater. The ensemble has also recorded over 12 albums, including "Johnny Mandel: The Man and His Music," and appeared in the film documentary "The Girls in the Band," which documents the perseverance of female big band artists from the 1930s to now.

Tickets are $28 for adults and $20 for those 18 and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Tickets are available at the Stewart Center box office at 765-494-3933 or 800-914-SHOW.
