Purdue warns of traffic issues for move-in days, provides helpful resources

August 12, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University is alerting all students to the closure of northbound Interstate 65 south of Lafayette and advising them to seek alternate routes to campus, to expect delays, and watch for help and guidance from county, city and Purdue law enforcement agencies.

John Cox, Purdue chief of police, said the return of nearly 40,000 students to the West Lafayette campus is always a time for increased diligence and attention to traffic, but the interstate closure compounds the challenge.

The first wave of students will arrive Monday (Aug. 17) and Tuesday (Aug. 18), when nearly 6,000 new students begin Boiler Gold Rush. The remainder of the returning students arrive throughout the week of Aug. 17 and before classes begin Aug. 24.

All students are being notified via email and through Purdue's social media accounts of traffic issues, and reminders will be sent via email and social media over the next two weeks.

For those students moving in to residence halls, a live move-in map by hall is available http://www.purdue.edu/studentsuccess/orientation/bgr/BGR_Final_Details.html

Cox said area, local and Purdue law enforcement are working together to staff intersections and stay on top of traffic issues. Purdue on Monday and Tuesday also will provide real-time tweets from @LifeAtPurdue and on Facebook at http://www.Facebook.com/PurdueUniversity to alert of any traffic issues or suggested route changes during Boiler Gold Rush.

For information on Monday and Tuesday of any traffic delays or issues around campus, motorists can call 765-496-6947.
