Appointments, honors and activities

Appointments and promotions:

- Carla Reeves, assistant to the dean in the College of Education, has been named executive assistant to Provost Deba Dutta, effective Jan. 20. Reeves replaces Cheryl Peterson, who is now deputy chief of staff reporting to the president of Virginia Tech University, former Purdue Provost Tim Sands. 

Faculty and staff honors:

- Charles Holleman, professor emeritus of aviation technology, will receive the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the Federal Aviation Administration. The award recognizes pilots who have demonstrated professionalism, skill and aviation expertise by maintaining safe operations for 50 or more years. Recipients are awarded a certificate and a lapel pin and are recognized in the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award Roll of Honor. He will receive the award during a ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 17) in the Holleman-Niswonger Simulator Center at the Purdue Airport.

Student honors:

- Carly Marshall, a senior from Carmel, Indiana, is Purdue's first finalist for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Marshall is a biology major studying neurobiology and physiology with a minor in psychology. She is the senior class representative of Purdue's women's varsity swimming and diving team. She also is a co-leader and founding member of the Athletic Outreach Committee for Purdue Dance Marathon, which raises funds for Riley Children's Hospital. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Students must possess outstanding intellectual ability, have leadership potential, and have demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of others. Rankings:

- Purdue's Engineering Professional Education program was ranked fourth among online engineering graduate programs by U.S. News & World Report's Best Online Program rankings. The rankings were released Jan. 7 and can be seen at http://www.usnews.com/education/online-education. The program has been in the top 10 in the rankings for three straight years. Purdue's Division of Engineering Professional Education delivers six different master's degrees online, said Dale Harris, executive director of the division. In 2014, there were more than 800 active distance students, making Purdue one of the largest providers of distance graduate engineering degrees in the nation. The magazine says its ranking is based on student engagement (30 percent), faculty credentials and training (25 percent), student services and technology (20 percent), peer reputation (15 percent) and admissions selectivity (10 percent).
