Purdue Extension workshops to focus on pest management

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Extension's Pest Management Program will offer a series of Crop Management workshops at five Indiana locations in January.

Workshop presentations are chosen based on the previous cropping year and new technologies, and they focus on a variety of pesticide regulation, agronomy and pest topics.

Purdue Extension experts presenting at the workshops are weed scientists Bill Johnson and Travis Legleiter, soil fertility specialist Jim Camberato, nematologist Jamal Faghihi, plant pathologist Kiersten Wise, entomologist Christian Krupke, corn specialist Bob Nielsen, and Fred Whitford, director of Purdue Pesticide Programs. Their presentation topics include weeds, soil nutrients, soybean cyst nematode, field-crop diseases, insect pest management, corn yields and herbicide adjuvants.

Joe Becovitz of the Office of Indiana State Chemist also will talk about "Complaints, Inspections, and Other Regulatory Revelations."

The workshops begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. at all locations and run until 4:30 p.m. Dates and locations:

* Jan. 27: Swan Lake Resort, 5203 Plymouth LaPorte Trail, Plymouth.

* Jan. 28: Wells County Community Center, 1240 4-H Park Road, Bluffton.

* Jan. 29: Walhill Farm, The Barn, 857 6 Pine Ranch Road, Batesville.

* Jan. 30: Huntingburg Event Center, 200 E. 14th St., Huntingburg.

* Jan. 31: Beck Agricultural Center, 4540 U.S. 52 W, West Lafayette.

Continuing credit hours for certified pesticide applicators will be available in categories 1, 4, 11, 14 and RT. Continuing education units for Certified Crop Advisers will be available in PM, CM and NM.

Private Applicator Recertification Program credits also will be available, and conference organizers have applied for Ohio applicator credits.

Registration is $80 per person, with an additional $10 fee for those requesting PARP credits. More information about registering is available at http://www.conf.purdue.edu/crop. All program sites likely will fill up, so participants are encouraged to register early.
