Postharvest workshop to focus on grain, pest management

November 9, 2012

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Extension experts will focus on grain and pest management at a Nov. 28 workshop in West Lafayette.

The Post-Harvest Update and Recertification Workshop is geared toward farmers, commercial grain storage handlers, pest management professionals and food processing quality-control managers. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and programming runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Beck Agricultural Center at Purdue's Agronomy Center for Research and Education, 4540 State Route 52 W.

Sessions will cover insect biology and identification, management of molds and mycotoxins in the 2012 crop, fundamentals of grain management, hidden pitfalls of measuring pesticides, the economic value of integrated pest management in grain storage, factors affecting grain storage for the 2012 crop, and fumigation and pesticide updates.

The workshop goal is to help attendees effectively manage postharvest systems to reduce pests, choose appropriate pest-control strategies and adopt integrated pest management systems, said Linda Mason, Purdue entomology professor and one of the workshop's presenters.

Other presenters are Charles Woloshuk, Purdue Extension plant pathologist; Matt Roberts, Purdue Extension agricultural engineer; Fred Whitford, coordinator of Purdue Pesticide Programs; and Corinne Alexander, Purdue Extension agricultural economist.

The workshop also will serve as this year's last opportunity for Indiana's certified advisers to earn continuing certification hours (CCHs). Six CCHs will be offered in categories 1, 7A and 7D. Four will be offered in categories 4 and RT.

Advance registration is $95 and is due by Nov. 23. On-site registration is $110. Registration is limited, so registering in advance is recommended. Lunch will be provided.
