Study Abroad | Short-Term Summer Programs

Short term study abroad summer courses are faculty-led and sponsored through individual departments within the College of Agriculture. They are designed so that students still have time to enroll in another summer session courses, participate in an internship, have a summer job, etc. Normally students earn three credits for the two to four week courses. Students pay a study abroad fee instead of Purdue summer tuition.

Kenya: COFFEE, TEA AND ME

This course is an examination of agricultural production (plants and animal) and renewable resources topics with emphasis on comparing issues in East Africa with the United States with an emphasis on agricultural innovation and sustainability.

Students will explore agriculture and other STEM areas across Kenya. Flower, coffee, tea production, hydroponics, vegetable breeding, dairy production, safari and nature preserves.

This faculty-led 15-day study tour will take students through the North Island of New Zealand. We will survey and learn about New Zealand’s natural beauty, culture and agriculture. We will view and discuss a wide range of topics including sustainable horticultural and agricultural production, environmental conservation, Maori culture, farmer’s markets and of course Hobbiton. Agriculture in New Zealand is incredibly diverse and we will be seeing vegetables, dairy, avocados, kiwifruit, vineyards, apples, honey, sheep, beef, and well as value-added production at a winery and craft brewery. We’ll explore natural and agricultural landscapes, learning about the unique wildlife and connecting it all to the rich geographical, historical and cultural heritage of this incredible country. Students with an interest in agriculture, environmental stewardship, natural resources and renewable energy, and how culture is entwined through all these activities, will benefit from this unique and rewarding study travel experience.

The course purpose is to strengthen learning, literacy, and life skills of Purdue students through beneficial engagement which improves lives and livelihoods of rural communities in Romania. Using established partner relationships, students will work with international partners to address identified challenges to learn the principles of extension methodology and sustainable community development by integrating their discipline knowledge and technical skills from previous courses. Through service-learning experiences students will also learn the intercultural communication, market analysis, project design and planning, business planning and business ventures, and cultural factors affecting community food security while they work in bi-national teams.

Learn how Spanish entrepreneur agrifood companies operate and how the properties and processing of food influence product performance. Participants will enjoy Mediterranean Lifestyle as locals do, will see where they work, shop, eat, relax and have fun.  Experience the most interesting places in Valencia.

A three-unit course will be offered to familiarize students with how entrepreneur agrifood companies operate in Spain and to provide how product performance is pursued through technical concepts of materials and relevant processes. Visits to various industries involve the use of unit operations and environmental conditions involved during the handling of food materials towards an end-product. The program encourages students to look for relationships of today’s agrifood field activities with some of the concepts covered in this course.  The main goal of the visit to Valencia is to bridge diversity across scales disciplines such as economic, technical, cultural and social aspects that lead the manufacturing field and readiness prior to an effective startup or own professional development. Ultimately, connecting-the-dots among the information that assists us to control behavior, to make predictions, to get involved in technology to manipulate systems for desired performance at various levels and stages, and equally important to compare and apply to the US practices. A central approach of this experience is the unconventional way of learning that will help the student to be creative, thinker, and learner of the know-how, or, just to wonder. In other words, consider the impact of all information to support your decision-making process as future professional.

This two-week international course in Valencia, Spain is designed to improve technical and intercultural skills. This is the first time this course is being proposed and offered.  The program will be M-F from 9:00 – 16:00 unless otherwise specified; lectures 9:00 – 10:30 followed by visits 11:00 – 13:30 to various field, industry and cultural sites; meals at 14:00. The program will take place at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). The UPV ranks as the first technical university from Spain and it is among some of the best in the world. A visit to the outstanding research center the Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos (IATA) is intended.

In this 4-week course, we will examine natural resources broadly defined, including forestry,  fisheries, wildlife, agriculture, mining, outdoor recreation, and urban sustainability. We will define, discover, and document examples where sustainability of resource use matters. The course explores the effect of terrain, climate, vegetation, faunal assemblages, social structures and technologies on natural resource use. FNR 46000 is a collaboration of Purdue University and North Carolina State University.
