September 10, 2007 Symposium to address relationships through the life courseWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Why adult children still live at home with their parents and the struggles of communicating with aging adults are some of the topics that will be discussed at a Sept. 21 symposium at Purdue University.The theme for the 2007 Center on Aging and the Life Course symposium is Interdisciplinary Intersections: Interpersonal Relations Over the Life Course. The symposium will take place from 1-5 p.m. and features three speakers. * 1:30 p.m. "Failure to Launch? Delayed Departure from the Family Home in Western Europe and Japan," presented by Katherine S. Newman, the Malcolm Stevenson Forbes Class of 1941 Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs at Princeton University. * 2:25 p.m. "Communicating Age: Stereotypes as Psychological and Interpersonal Phenomena," presented by Mary Lee Hummert, a professor of communication studies at University of Kansas. * 3:10 p.m. "It's Not as Bad as We Think: Understanding Emotion Regulation Amongst Age-related Gains and Losses," presented by Susan Charles, an associate professor of sociology ecology at the University of California at Irvine. The speakers also will answer questions during a panel session at 3:55 p.m. The symposium is free for Purdue faculty, staff or students and people 65 years and older. The registration fee for others is $40. There is no fee for those attending only Newman's talk.
