Tornado fatalities continue to fall, despite population growth in Tornado Alley

The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 ushered in a movement of westward migration in the United States, and with new territory came new challenges – and weather phenomena. The rate of tornado-related fatalities increased faster than the rate of population growth until the start of the 20th century, according to a new study in the journal Weather, Climate, and Society. Around 1916, that trend started to reverse. Professor Ernest Agee credits the decline in fatalities to better scientific understanding of tornadoes and technology to warn people of developing storm events.

New technology helps
address big problems for small satellites

CubeSats have become big players in space exploration. Their small size and relatively low cost have made them popular choices for commercial launches in recent years, but the process to propel such satellites in space comes with a number of problems. Now, Purdue researchers have developed a technology to address one of those key problems – the uncertainty of the ignition system that initiates the propulsion system of the CubeSats.

Footprints series: Don and Liz Thompson

Don and Liz Thompson, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering alumni, are grateful to the Minority Engineering Program, which enabled them to take their giant leap from Chicago’s Cleveland Avenue to Purdue University. The Thompsons are now helping others on their journey to Purdue through a $1 million endowment for the College of Engineering focused on scholarships for minority engineering students at the West Lafayette campus.
