Rally Line

Students at Rally Line put their effort toward Purdue's success

They're an unobtrusive bunch. Tucked in a basement room of the Dick and Sandy Dauch Alumni Center, they hang out for a few hours each day, often after regular business hours, talking on the phone to people they've never met.

They're the students who work for Purdue's Rally Line. The group has gone by many names over the years, including Phone-a-thon, Telefund, and others. But its mission has remained the same: to send its students' voices out over phone lines all over the country and beyond, raising support for Purdue from the people who most want to see it succeed -- its alumni. Find out more about Rally Line in the May/June 2014 issue of Purdue Alumnus.

The program, established by the U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors to reduce the environmental impact of passenger vehicles, has benefited participants by preparing them for careers in industry, says Peter Meckl (in yellow shirt), professor of mechanical engineering and lead faculty advisor. The vehicle will be tested in several categories including safety, acceleration, braking, handling, emissions and energy consumption measured over a 100-mile trip consisting of repeating sequences of "city" and "highway" driving modes.
