Smartphone to become smarter with 'deep learning' innovation

Researchers are working to enable smartphones and other mobile devices to understand and immediately identify objects in a camera's field of view, overlaying lines of text that describe items in the environment. "It analyzes the scene and puts tags on everything," said Eugenio Culurciello, an associate professor in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Psychological Sciences.

The innovation could find applications in "augmented reality" technologies like Google Glass, facial recognition systems and robotic cars that drive themselves.

As part of Indiana's Severe Weather Preparedness Week, Purdue's Office of Emergency Preparedness and Planning will coordinate a campus-wide tornado drill today (March 20).

Donations for Purdue Agriculture scholarships increase 4-fold

The College of Agriculture received $9 million in scholarship support during the last fiscal year from alumni and other donors, about four times more than usual for a one-year period, according to new figures. Increasing scholarship offerings is among the priorities in the University's Purdue Moves initiative, and "the conversation of affordability has resonated with Purdue Agriculture donors," says Eric Putman, director of agricultural advancement for the college.

I-STEM, Purdue, South Bend schools partner in program for science teachers

The I-STEM Resource Network, Purdue's colleges of Engineering and Education and the South Bend Community School Corporation will partner in a program to help science teachers incorporate mathematics and engineering in their classrooms.

Vice chancellor for finance and administration named for Purdue Calumet and Purdue North Central

Stephen R. Turner will assume responsibilities as the vice chancellor for finance and administration for both Purdue University North Central and Purdue University Calumet effective April 1. The appointment represents the first step in unification efforts intended to combine administrative and academic oversight functions at the two campuses.

Boilers earn No. 4 seed, to host Akron in NCAA first round

Purdue women's basketball was granted its 24th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history on Monday, earning the No. 4 seed in the South Bend Regional. The Boilermakers will host 13th-seeded Akron at 1:30 p.m. Saturday (March 22) in Mackey Arena.

Pep rally set to cheer on Purdue women's basketball

Purdue women's basketball fans can cheer on the team as it arrives Saturday (March 22) at Mackey Arena for the NCAA Tournament. A pep rally organized by the Purdue Alumni Association and the John Purdue Club will welcome the Boilermakers at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the southwest entrance to Mackey Arena.

10 to represent Purdue women's swimming and diving at NCAAs

Tickets available for postseason basketball banquets

The Purdue men's and women's basketball teams will be honored at awards banquets in April. The 92nd annual men's basketball banquet will be held April 9, and the 28th annual women's basketball banquet is set for April 2.
