For some employees, the NCCA basketball tournament is an experience they savor each year. For others, it is a yearly detour into the world of low-stakes betting in office pools.
As an employer, whether to encourage employees to participate in NCAA festivities on the job is not a decision to be taken lightly, says Ellen Ernst Kossek, the Basil S. Turner Professor of Management and research director of the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence. Kossek says that although it might be easiest to ignore the fact that some workers are watching games at their desks, it might be a useful management tool to address the tournament head-on.

Faculty and staff news
The Administrative and Professional Staff Advisory Committee is now accepting nominations for the annual APSAC Excellence Award, which recognizes A/P staff members who consistently perform at an outstanding level.
The Center for Instructional Excellence will host a conference March 26-27 that focuses on faculty members' methods and experiences in transforming their teaching methods to meet 21st-century students' needs.
Faculty, staff and students are being invited to participate in focus groups on the Gallup-Purdue alumni survey.
The Board of Trustees' Academic Affairs Committee will hold a public meeting at 9 a.m. Friday (March 14) in Stewart Center, Room 326. The agenda is available on the Board of Trustees website.
Another pair of public meetings regarding the State Street Master Plan will take place Thursday (March 13). Both will use an open house format.

President Mitch Daniels will address more than 200 corporate leaders in the manufacturing industry when he speaks Thursday (March 13) to the National Association of Manufacturers in California.
Purdue Foundry and VisionTech Partners LLC have entered into an agreement to expedite the transfer of Purdue innovations to the public through commercialization deals and development of startups.
Registration is now open for Purdue's eighth annual Elevator Pitch Competition, scheduled for 2-5 p.m. April 4 in the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, Room 121, in Discovery Park. The event is organized by the University's Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program.
