President's Forum

Forum highlights engineering, computer science initiatives

Thursday's President's Forum focused on two of the new Purdue Moves initiatives -- expanding the College of Engineering and strengthening computer science. The forum featured opening remarks by President Mitch Daniels and presentations by Leah Jamieson, the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering; Pedro Irazoqui, director of the Center for Implantable Devices and associate professor of biomedical engineering and electrical and computer engineering; Sunil Prabhakar, professor and head of the Department of Computer Science; and Jennifer Neville, associate professor of computer science and statistics. Engineering pre-eminent teams get priority in hiring

Purdue's College of Engineering has named four research teams that will be a priority for faculty hiring during the coming year. The teams were chosen because the work they do has the potential for dramatic impact and international pre-eminence.

Purdue plans to strengthen computer science program, educate more students

Strengthening computer science through a 27 percent increase in undergraduate and graduate student enrollment capacity and additional support for strategic research programs is part of a series of initiatives at Purdue.

Deductible will be waived on all preventive prescription drugs for 2014

Human Resources has announced that all three 2014 Purdue medical plans will waive the deductible on brand-name preventive prescription drugs. Originally, the deductible for these drugs was going to be waived only on the Purdue Health Plan.

Human Resources making courtesy phone calls to faculty, staff who have not enrolled for 2014

Human Resources is making courtesy phone calls to employees who have not yet enrolled for their 2014 benefits. The calls began this week, and a big effort is planned for this Saturday (Nov. 9).

Today's benefit enrollment events

The following events are scheduled for today (Nov. 8):

  • Walk-in lab at 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. in Freehafer Hall, Room 1-5.
  • Walk-in lab for speakers of Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese at 2-4 p.m. in McCutcheon Residence Hall, Room C217.
  • Walk-in help with Anthem representatives at 8 a.m.- noon in Stewart Center, Room 322.
  • Walk-in help session with voluntary benefit counselors at 8 a.m.-noon in Stewart Center, Room 322.

Faculty volunteers needed for CourseNetworking, eText pilots

ITaP is looking for faculty volunteers to participate in two pilot programs, one testing a next-generation learning management system called CourseNetworking, and the other a Purdue digital textbook development initiative.

Early users praise Purdue's new Conte supercomputer, now open to campus researchers

Purdue's new Conte community cluster, now in full production and ready for use by campus researchers, is earning praise from early faculty users for speeding and enhancing research computation, modeling and simulation. With 77,520 processing cores, including Intel's Xeon Phi accelerator technology, Conte is by far the most powerful Purdue research supercomputer yet.

Sandia Labs director to give tech view of national security

Paul Hommert, director of Sandia National Laboratories and president of Sandia Corp., will speak about national security Tuesday (Nov. 12) at Purdue's Discovery Park.

CSSAC offering discounts at businesses for 2013-14

Blue, wallet-size cards summarizing business discounts will be distributed next week through campus mailboxes, and the discount listings will be available on the Clerical and Service Staff Advisory Committee's website at www.purdue.edu/cssac/Employee_Discounts/index.html.

President Mitch Daniels will join more than 1,250 leaders from public higher education for the 126th Annual Meeting of the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU) next week in Washington, D.C.
