In the Spotlight
A hiking trip to the Northern Cascade Mountains in Washington led then aeronautical engineer Andy Freed to discover a new challenge and career path: researching and teaching geophysics. Freed is a professor of earth, atmospheric, and planetary sciences. As a researcher, he studies earthquakes and planetary surfaces, but as a professor he has fun teaching undergraduate non-majors about science through a class called Geosciences in the Cinema.
Faculty and staff news
The Administrative and Professional Staff Advisory Committee will offer a live-streamed workshop titled "Leadership is an Attitude" on Tuesday (Nov. 5) as part of its Lovell Leadership Series. Registration for the workshop is full, but all Purdue staff members can watch the event via live stream.
The Purdue community is invited to join President Mitch Daniels for a President's Forum from 8 to 9 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 7) in Purdue Memorial Union, South Ballroom. The forum will feature Daniels along with panelists who are leading Purdue Moves initiatives to expand the College of Engineering and strengthen computer science.
Today's benefit enrollment events
Today (Nov. 4), a walk-in lab will be held 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in Freehafer Hall, Room 1-5. For a schedule of live sessions and additional help during benefits open enrollment, visit www.purdue.edu/benefits/enroll.html. Open enrollment ends at 6 p.m. (ET) Nov. 15.

Board of Trustees news
The Executive Committee of Purdue's Board of Trustees on Friday (Nov. 1) approved the transfer of its fundraising and investment offices to Purdue Research Foundation.
Amy Noah has been named vice president for development, effective immediately, after having served as interim vice president since April 1.
General news
A symposium to educate and engage people in support of military veterans will take place Friday (Nov. 8) in conjunction with the fifth Purdue Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities. All at Purdue are invited to participate in any or all of the day's six symposium events, which are presented by the Krannert School of Management.

A Purdue anthropologist who studies primate ecology and nutrition in human evolution is one of 10 runners selected for the 2015 Race Across USA, and he also will lead the event's various research projects including evaluation of a program designed to promote childhood activity as well as the biological and behavioral responses to extreme physical activity.
