Purdue is home to a recently launched academic journal about political science called Politics, Groups, and Identities. The quarterly journal is the official academic publication of the Western Political Science Association (WPSA), which is based at Portland State University and is a group of more than 1,200 political scientists. Politics, Groups, and Identities published its first issue in March and counts four Purdue faculty members among its seven co-editors.

The Purdue community is invited to join President Mitch Daniels for a President's Forum on Thursday (Oct. 3) in Purdue Memorial Union, South Ballroom. The forum, scheduled for 8-9 a.m., will feature Daniels along with panelists who are leading two of the new West Lafayette campus initiatives -- changing the way learning occurs and engaging students with international experiences.
Faculty and staff who need advice on incorporating and assessing embedded outcomes from Purdue's core curriculum within their courses or curricula are invited to a Faculty/Staff Communities of Practice Callout on Tuesday (Oct. 8).
Due to overwhelming interest, ADVANCE has added a third session of the "ADVANCE-Office of Institutional Equity Search Committee Workshop on Faculty Hiring."
Research news
Researchers are developing a system that uses tiny magnetic beads to quickly detect rare types of cancer cells circulating in a patient's blood, an advance that could help medical doctors diagnose cancer earlier than now possible and monitor how well a patient is responding to therapy.

Purdue will open its Artisan and Fabrication Lab so that more faculty, staff and student entrepreneurs can use the space to build prototypes of their products.
The lack of a developing, dominant weather system coupled with erratic changes over the past year indicate that Indiana could be in for wide swings in weather in the early weeks of autumn, the State Climate Office says.
A $2.5 million federal grant will be used to further advance a patent-pending fiber designed to help people affected by irritable bowel syndrome. The fiber was developed at Purdue's College of Agriculture and Rush University Medical Center.

The Big Ten Conference on Tuesday (Oct. 1) unveiled the television schedule for the 2013-14 women's basketball season, including 10 national appearances for Purdue -- two of them on ESPN2.
