When it comes to connecting members of the electricity industry with Purdue's cutting-edge academics, Steve Shelby is really charged up. Shelby is managing director for the Purdue Smart Grid Initiative, which uses a $9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to train students for 21st-century, energy-related jobs. In addition to developing and promoting the initiative with industry, Shelby is working with universities in the United Kingdom to provide Purdue students with global project team experience. The Purdue Foundry (purduefoundry.com), an entrepreneurship and commercialization hub at Purdue, will provide information on its startup services at its open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 4) in the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship.
Purdue has joined eduroam, a secure wireless service that lets faculty, staff and students connect at more than 5,500 eduroam-enabled locations worldwide. The service also provides network access at Purdue's West Lafayette campus for visitors from participating institutions without the need for guest wireless credentials.
The Office of Marketing and Media is hosting a series of branding workshops this fall to help departments integrate the Purdue brand into their online, print and social media communications.
A semester's worth of arts and entertainment information will be distributed today (Aug. 29) in campus mail in the Fall 2013 issue of Arts at Purdue, produced in cooperation with the Lafayette Journal and Courier.

A new book by Purdue sports historian Randy Roberts looks at how Bear Bryant and Joe Namath helped transform football into a national pastime as the big business and star power of sports emerged during the tumultuous 1960s.

Fenggang Yang, professor of sociology and director of the University's Center on Religion and Chinese Society, has been elected the 2014-15 president of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion.
Caroline E. Janney, associate professor of history, has been selected as the 2014-16 president of the Society of Civil War Historians.

Purdue volleyball will open its 2013 season at home on Friday (Aug. 30) with the annual Mortar Board Premier, which will feature USC, Alabama A&M and Western Kentucky.
The Big Ten Conference has announced its 2013-14 men's basketball schedule, releasing the dates and times for the Boilermakers' 18-game conference schedule.
