Purdue has announced the July 15 opening of the Purdue Foundry, an entrepreneurship and commercialization hub in the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship. The foundry will collaborate with longstanding activities already taking place in the center with a goal to increase the already growing demand from Purdue innovators who have an interest in forming a startup or licensing their discoveries.
Faculty and staff news
Purdue officials on Thursday (June 13) announced that Michael B. Cline, a Purdue civil engineering graduate, has been appointed as the University's vice president for physical facilities, effective July 1. Ted Weidner has been serving as interim vice president since the departure of Robert McMains on June 7.
This memo provides details regarding the approval process for the purchase or acquisition of all equipment, software and services related to IT. The new process will impact all purchases of IT commodities made with general fund or auxiliary sources and potential beneficiaries of free software or IT services. The memo was sent to List 39 on June 11, 2013, on behalf of Jim Almond, senior vice president for business services and assistant treasurer, and Gerry McCartney, chief information officer and vice president for information technology.
The annual retirement recognition luncheon will be held on June 27 for Purdue employees. The luncheon will honor employees who retired July 1, 2012, through June 30, 2013.

Research news
A medical test previously developed to measure a toxin found in tobacco smokers has been adapted to measure the same toxin in people suffering from spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis, offering a potential tool to reduce symptoms.
General news
Area residents are invited to meet President Mitch Daniels at a free picnic today (June 17). It will be held at 5-7 p.m. at Imagination Station, 600 N. Fourth St., Lafayette.
A hand-me-down that has spanned more than 100 years, eight deans and is a Purdue tradition will soon be open book to the masses. The Deans' Bible, passed from one Purdue dean to another over the course of generations, will become part of the Purdue University Libraries' Division of Archives and Special Collections.
The Department of Biochemistry has won the 2013 Arthur G. Hansen Recognition Award for its relationship with its retirees.
Photos depicting amicable veterans that will be displayed during the 150th anniversary of Civil War events this summer at Gettysburg don't accurately represent how many felt when the bloody conflict ended, according to a Purdue history professor.
