In 1875, Purdue celebrated its first graduating class, which consisted of a single graduate in chemistry, John Bradford Harper. Though a graduate in chemistry, Harper is historically known as a pioneer in civil engineering.
The history of Purdue's first graduate is documented in a biography compiled by David Hovde, associate professor of library science.

The Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship is sponsoring a workshop for faculty who are interested in becoming more familiar with the SBIR/STTR (Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer) process at Purdue.
The Center for Instructional Excellence (CIE) will host a conference March 21 in which faculty members will present their methods and experiences in redesigning foundational courses as part of the IMPACT initiative.
Purdue faculty, staff, administrators and students on March 21 can attend a luncheon with a keynote address by the provost that will focus on teaching and learning methods at Purdue.
This is the second in a series introducing staff who work at Purdue's new Center for Healthy Living. Deidre Dudley, one of two nurse practitioners at the center, is featured today.
Brochures offering information about the Center for Healthy Living were mailed this week to campus addresses.

Halfway through this year's Recyclemania competition, which ends March 30, the Office of University Sustainability encourages Purdue faculty and staff members to recycle any remaining unneeded files and paperwork.

Purdue will celebrate International Women's Day 2013 with a panel discussion on "Women Changing the World" at 8 a.m. Friday (March 8) in Purdue Memorial Union, Anniversary Drawing Room. The event is co-sponsored by the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence, the Global Policy Research Institute, and the Center for Research on Diversity and Inclusion. Underground pipelines are lifelines when disaster strikes, especially in earthquakes. Now, researchers within a national earthquake engineering network managed by Purdue have discovered how to make water lines that will bend and move rather than snap and rupture in an earthquake.

Boilermaker fans are invited to join the Purdue Alumni Association, Intercollegiate Athletics and the BOILERmaker NETwork as they send off the 25th-ranked Purdue women's basketball team to the 2013 Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament in style. Fans are encouraged to meet at noon today (March 7) at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex lower parking lot to give the team a rousing send-off. The team will arrive at the lot about 12:40 p.m. and the bus will depart at 1 p.m.
