The beginning of our fall semester is always exciting for our faculty, staff and students; but for the Purdue family this year, it also brings reflection. Late last month, Purdue lost perhaps its most cherished alumnus, astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Faculty and staff news
The 2012 Purdue United Way Campaign aims to raise $745,000 for Greater Lafayette agencies beginning with its kickoff Tuesday (Sept. 11).
The first President's Forum of the semester will be 8- 9 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 6) in Stewart Center, Room 302. Acting President Timothy Sands will open the forum with a brief look at current key metrics and campus updates. The featured speaker will be Carol Shelby, senior director of environmental health and public safety, with a presentation and discussion on safety and security titled "Emergency Preparedness: Are We Ready?"
Beginning Oct. 8, seasonal flu shot appointments provided by WorkLife Programs will be available on the West Lafayette campus. The vendor for these events is Maxim Health Systems.
Purdue's ongoing data center consolidation project has funding available for departments, faculty and staff to help foster server and data center consolidation in their areas.
The Purdue Center for International Business Education and Research will present "Bringing the World to Your Classroom through Digital Technology" on Sept. 21. The workshop is open to faculty and doctoral students. Details about presenters and registration are available in a PDF file.
General news
C-SPAN founder and executive chairman Brian Lamb will interview Purdue president-elect Gov. Mitch Daniels about higher education issues and preparing for the role of university president at a public event Sept. 27.
Volunteers are needed to help conduct the inaugural Purdue Boilermaker Half Marathon and 5K on Oct. 20.
Indiana's farmland values and cash rents have continued to soar in 2012, even amid the worst drought in decades, according to a June 2012 Purdue survey.

Purdue's Kampen Course, a component of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, has been ranked the No. 3 course in all of college golf by PGA.com.
