Alumnus to lead new NASA human spaceflight unit

William H. Gerstenmaier, a Purdue graduate, has been appointed to lead NASA's new Human Exploration and Operations (HEO) Mission Directorate. The unit will oversee human spaceflight, which is intended to include travel to the moon, asteroids and Mars. At Purdue, Gerstenmaier earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering in 1977, has completed doctoral coursework and has received the Outstanding Aerospace Engineer Award.
